In the 8 months since the Jasper wildfire, I’ve been creating - and appreciating - art. I just haven’t had the energy to post on social media. As a result, my feed since the fire has been taken over by Wild Aerial - thanks to our director @trixie_ , who manages the account with aplomb. In a random twist of fate, the film was finished the week of the wildfire, and since then its great public success has run in parallel with my great personal loss. It’s been a weird time.

Knowing just how much art can help in a weird/hard time, I’m giving myself a soft/slow goal of sharing some of the work I’ve created in the aftermath of the fire. No schedule, no deadlines, no ‘Sad Art Saturdays’ (though maybe, because I do love alliteration).

But first up, I want to share some things from other artists that have brought me light since the fire:

1) This stained glass window is in our rental house. I call her the drippy lady and she makes me smile when I walk past her. Artist: unknown
2) These three prints have been a daily reminder of what really matters: holding the ones you love close, plants, and (obviously) dogs. Artist: @thecreativetraveller
3) A dear friend gifted us these handcarved spoons upon learning we didn’t have much in the way of cooking utensils. Artist: olive trees + unknown human
4) After the fire an incredible group of Alberta quilters gifted a whole bunch of quilts to displaced Jasperites. We were lucky enough to receive this masterpiece. Artist: unknown
5) When friend/photographer Kyle came to visit us in our rental, he surprised us with new copies of prints we’d lost in the fire. This one was taken several years ago and I’ve always loved it but it’s taken on extra meaning since the fire. Artist: @kylegrahamphotography + me

7) Shortly after moving into our rental, a box arrived with these beautiful pieces by the mom of one of Marcus’s high school friends. They make me think of mermaids. Artist: Patty Streb
8) I don’t know how I would have gotten through without this dog. Artist: Raven

Photo dump from a whirlwind three weeks in California. I got to see a bunch of much missed faces, attended @wildaerial screenings in Los Angeles & Tahoe, and even got a couple family ski days in at my former ski patrol mountain, Alpine Meadows.

Now I’m on my way home and can’t wait to see my two most favourite faces, Marcus & Raven. 💕

One year ago, I learned about a magnificent glacier arch in Iceland. I had such a clear vision of performing aerial in that arch that I immediately started trying to get a trip together. However, as I was plotting and planning, I heard that the ice was cracking and melting. It quickly became apparent that even if I got myself to Iceland, the arch would no longer be safe to hang from. As spring turned to summer, it collapsed completely.

Imagine my surprise when a similar ice arch appeared this winter in my own backyard, in the Canadian Rockies. I’m so grateful I was able to visit this incredible glacial sculpture, knowing that it too will soon be gone.

Glaciers + friends + snacks is always a good time; add in the possibility of aerial acrobatics and some film cameras and things can get truly extraordinary!

One of the hardest parts of losing my home to a climate-fueled natural disaster is realizing, with chilling certainty, that so many more people stand to face this magnitude of loss. First, it was hurricane Helene. This week, it’s the LA wildfires. My heart breaks for all the people becoming newly, unwillingly, acquainted with what it’s like to lose it all. It hurts more to know that there will be many more to come.

You know that quote that’s floating around social media right now - how climate change will be viewed on your phone, getting closer and closer until you’re the one filming? It’s true. If you haven’t been personally impacted yet, odds are you will be. Here are some great ways to get involved, courtesy of @earthlyeducation:

1️⃣ Social influence - wake your friends, family and colleagues up to how dire the situation is.

2️⃣ Influence politics & governments - lobby & become an activist which comes in many forms, or maybe get involved in local politics.

3️⃣ Shift investments - ensure your finances aren’t investing in damaging practices such as war, fossil fuels, deforestation etc.

4️⃣ Organise!! Join a climate group, organisation or local movement

5️⃣ Behavioural change - inspire the world & markets around you by (imperfectly) being the change you wish to see, reducing meat consumption and going plant-based is one of the biggest individual impacts someone can make

5️⃣.5️⃣ Systemic change - we desperately need to consider how our systems are designed to drive decline, and work towards dismantling the oppressive and extractive ways that are forced upon us - think mass international boycott of extractive and exploitative products! Disruption and non-violent protest will also be key 👍

6️⃣ Look after yourself & each other 💚 building community is more important than ever before

7️⃣ Is there a local campaign working to endorse the @fossilfueltreaty, if so, support their work, if not, start a movement and get your local government to endorse!
